One of Helena’s greatest assets are its open lands, forests, and mountains. They bring many scenic, recreational, and natural marvels to Helena and allow residents and visitors to intermingle with the wildlands in a unique way.
The city of Helena currently owns and manages over 1738 acres of open and undeveloped parkland, including the Mount Ascension Park and Mount Helena City Park. There are 700 miles of hiking trails in Helena National Forest with 5 access points to hike the Continental Divide Trail.
Prickly Pear Land Trust is also an integral part of preserving our access to spacious views, abundant wildlife, and recreational opportunities. PPLT strives to connect people to their natural surroundings though trails and access to public lands. In Helena’s South Hills, PPLT has been the lead trail builder and maintenance provider on behalf of the City of Helena since 2001 and for the Forest Service since 2006.Easy access to open space is one reason why Helena is becoming a popular place to call homebase.
Here are 3 of my favorite hikes to check out:
- Willard Creek Trail in Clancy
- Prospect Shafts trail on Mount Helena
- Mini Ridge Loop off Grizzly Gulch
Get outside and Enjoy!
